How to Deep Clean Your Oven: A Step-by-Step Guide
Published August 1, 2024
Keeping your oven clean is crucial for a healthy kitchen and delicious meals. As time passes, grease, grime, and burnt food build up inside your oven. Not only can this affect how your food tastes, but it can also hinder your oven's performance and even become a fire risk.
Deep cleaning your oven might seem challenging, but it can be straightforward and rewarding with the right approach. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of deep cleaning your oven effectively.

Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. Here's what you'll need:
• Baking soda
• White vinegar
• Dish soap
• Water
• Spray bottle
• Scrub brush or sponge
• Microfiber cloths or paper towels
• Rubber gloves
• Plastic or silicone spatula
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Remove Oven Racks and Accessories
Start by removing all oven racks, thermometers, and any other accessories. These will be cleaned separately to ensure every part of your oven gets the attention it needs.
Protect Your Floor
Place an old towel or some newspapers on the floor in front of your oven to catch any drips or debris that might fall during the cleaning process.

Step 2: Make a Cleaning Paste
Mix Baking Soda and Water
In a small bowl, mix half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to form a thick paste. Adjust the amount of water as needed to achieve a spreadable consistency.
Apply the Paste
Using a spatula or your hands (wear gloves to protect your skin), spread the baking soda paste all over the interior surfaces of your oven, avoiding the heating elements. Pay extra attention to areas with heavy buildup. The baking soda will work to break down grease and grime.
Step 3: Let It Sit
Let the baking soda paste sit for at least 12 hours or overnight if possible. This gives it ample time to soften the baked-on food and grease, making it easier to remove.
Step 4: Clean the Oven Racks
Soak the Racks
While waiting for the paste to work, place your oven racks in a large sink or bathtub filled with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Let them soak for a few hours to loosen any stuck-on food.
Scrub the Racks
After soaking, use a scrub brush or sponge to clean the racks thoroughly. Rinse them with clean water and dry them with a cloth or let them air dry.
Step 5: Wipe Down the Oven Interior
Remove the Baking Soda Paste
After the paste has sat for the recommended time, use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe out as much of the baking soda paste as possible. For stubborn spots, you can use a plastic or silicone spatula to gently scrape off the residue.
Spray with Vinegar
Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spritz it all over the oven's interior. The vinegar will react with any remaining baking soda, creating a foamy reaction that helps lift off the last bits of grime.
Wipe Clean
Use a damp cloth to wipe down the oven again, removing the vinegar and any remaining paste. Repeat this process until the oven is completely clean and free of residue.

Step 6: Clean the Oven Door
Clean the Glass
For the oven door, especially the glass, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water to make a thinner paste. Spread it on the glass and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
Wipe and Polish
After about 30 minutes, wipe off the paste with a damp cloth. Use a glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water to give the glass a final polish, ensuring it’s streak-free.
Step 7: Reassemble the Oven
Replace the Racks and Accessories
Once the interior is clean and dry, put the oven racks and any accessories back in place. Make sure everything is properly positioned before using your oven again.
Oven Maintenance Tips
Regular Cleaning
To keep your oven in top condition, clean up spills and splatters as soon as they occur. Regularly wipe down the interior with a damp cloth to prevent buildup.
Use Oven Liners
Consider using oven liners or baking sheets to catch drips and crumbs, making future cleanings easier and less frequent.
